Drive-By Shooting Review of the Samsung PN42B450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV

Features / Performance

The Samsung PN42B450 is huge for a 720p resolution plasma TV. Many other manufacturers choose to use 1080p technology in a television of this size; however, as I have stated time after time; unless the screen size is pushing 50 inches or larger, then there is no real noticeable difference in display performance between the two. If you think there is, then your eyes are better than mine (and my very costly equipment that measures such things).

It seems that Samsung knows this better than any other manufacturer; because they continue to make 720p technology look as good as, or better than, many 1080p resolution enabled HDTVs. In short, this thing is wicked awesome and fantastic in terms of visual clarity and picture image.

With the PN42B450, the colors are rich, accurate and well defined; and since it is plasma the blacks, whites and grays are simply perfect.  Tonal balance is awesome, as is image warmth and depth.  Plasma shines image tracing performance; and the result is no ghosting or fast action image blur at all. It’s simply amazing with games and fast action movies.

Samsungs’ expert implementation of the QAM HDTV tuner technology is, as usual, flawless; and the PN42B450 plasma displays major network HDTV broadcasts clearly and effortlessly. It boasts exceptional connectivity with three HDMI connection ports, PC video and audio in/out ports and an optical audio out connection. In addition, it has convenient side-mounted A/V input ports. Like every Samsung remote control I’ve ever tested, this one is durable, well laid out and works with everything. Likewise, the Samsung PN42B450 produces excellent surround sound for movies and music.

Conclusion

I don’t know when it will end. Samsung continues to surprise me with the level of features, performance, quality and value that they are able to produce in a television at such an attractive price. If you want HDTV that will keep you smiling, impress your friends and won’t send you to the poor house; then the Samsung PN42B450 is the TV for you.
